Red Sox exercise option on P Lester

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The World Series champion Boston Red Sox have exercised the 2014 contract option on ace Jon Lester, announced Executive Vice President and General Manager Ben Cherington.


Lester went 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA in the 2013 postseason and was instrumental in helping Boston clinch the eighth World Series in franchise history. In two World Series starts, Lester shut down St. Louis bats to the tune of a 0.59 ERA with a pair of wins.


Lester, 29, posted a 15-8 record this past season with a 3.75 ERA and led the Sox with 33 starts and 177 strikeouts. The left-hander currently ranks 11th in franchise history with 100 wins.
