Belichick Faults Welker for Hit
Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said Monday that Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker deliberately tried to 'take out' New England cornerback Aqib Talib when they collided in the A.F.C. championship game.
Talib hurt his knee on the play early in the second quarter Sunday and missed the rest of the game. Denver beat New England, 26-16, to advance to the Super Bowl.
Belichick called the play one of the worst he had seen and said Welker made no attempt to get open. On the play, Peyton Manning's pass to Demaryius Thomas fell incomplete. No penalty was called.
Welker, who had a cool relationship with Belichick when he left New England after six seasons, was not available for comment Monday. After the game, Welker said he was trying to get Talib to go behind him as the two headed for each other across the middle.
'It wasn't a deal where I was trying to hit him or anything like that,' Welker said.
HARVIN EXPECTED BACK Seattle wide receiver Percy Harvin is expected to be available for the Super Bowl.
Harvin missed the N.F.C. championship game after sustaining a concussion a week earlier in the Seahawks' playoff win over New Orleans. Coach Pete Carroll said Harvin could practice as early as Wednesday.
The New Orleans game was only the second of the season for Harvin, who had hip surgery in August.
HOPES FOR BOWMAN The 49ers' linebackers coach, Jim Leavitt, said he was optimistic that NaVorro Bowman would be able to play when the team opens Levi's Stadium next season.
Bowman is expected to have surgery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Sunday.
REDSKINS HIRE HILLIARD The former Giant Ike Hilliard was named the Washington Redskins' receivers coach.
