'Braver' film industry taking on Hollywood

Actress Pollyanna McIntosh with Actors Hugh O Connor (Left) and Andrew Scott (Right) IRISH film is experiencing a 'renaissance' with a big impact at Sundance and the Oscars this year, according to the director of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.

Grainne Humphreys said she thinks Irish filmmakers have become much 'braver'.

'I have been working in film in Ireland for 20 years, and when I started out, there were maybe five big actors and three renowned directors - Pat O'Connor, Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan. Now there are a huge number of directors making outstanding films.

'We have films opening in Sundance, there are going to be some films in Cannes, we're nearly disappointed if we're not nominated for an Oscar. We are standing shoulder to shoulder with Hollywood.'

She was speaking as the 12th annual festival was launched at Smithfield's Lighthouse Cinema.

The festival, which runs from February 13-23, will open on February 13 with a screening of John Martin McDonagh's 'Calvary'.

Meanwhile, 'Sherlock' actor Andrew Scott (above), who was speaking at the festival's launch, says the 'doors to Hollywood have opened up' since he landed a role with Daniel Radcliffe in the new 'Frankenstein' movie.

The Dublin actor, who has become a household name playing evil Professor Moriarty in the BBC's hit series 'Sherlock', is in the middle of shooting the horror feature.

'I'm filming 'Frankenstein' at the moment for 20th Century Fox - which is really exciting. I play Turpin - who is the counterpoint to Frankenstein,' he explained.

'Frankenstein' will hit cinema screens in 2015; and also stars James McAvoy as Victor Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe as Igor.
