Cannes International Film Festival: Broadway Cinema staff aim to find hidden ...
The best films and hidden gems at this year's Cannes International Film Festival could soon be winging their way to Nottingham.
That's the hope of five members of staff from Broadway Cinema in Hockley, who are set to jet off for the world-renowned festival in France this week, with the aim of discovering the best independent and arthouse cinema on show.
Staff have previously been able to attract up-and-coming directors to preview their work at Broadway after meeting at Cannes.
John Tobin, development director at Broadway, said: 'It's about getting a first look at some of the films likely to reach our screens over the next 12 months. It's also where the global film industry gathers to network and celebrate cinema, so it's great for seeing how the film industry's shaping up for the future.
'Cannes is also where we can promote Broadway and the fantastic film talent we have in Nottingham. With the world's film industry press all in one place it's ideal.'
Chris Cooke and Steven Sheil, co-directors of Broadway's annual Mayhem horror and Sci-Fi film festival, are part of the team heading to Cannes.
They will be hunting for the best films to screen at Mayhem, which will mark its 10th anniversary in October.
Of his first visit to Cannes, Mr Cooke said: 'We want to see what's out there, both British and international, that's new and could cause waves back here.
'There are some films I have heard rumours about and have booked to see but I'm hoping to just discover some, particularly Sci-Fi films that could work for our audience.
'I want to find that one film that pushes the envelope and surprises people.'
Previous visits to Cannes by Mr Sheil led to guest appearances by director Gareth Edwards at Mayhem.
His latest film, Godzilla, is due to be screened at cinemas across the UK from Friday, May 16.
Mr Cooke said: 'I'd like to find films that are challenging and cover the genre in new angles, or are great examples of story-telling.
'I'm looking to bring back the films that surprise, startle and will work here. I want to bring the next big cult film to Nottingham, and their directors to talk about it.'
The team from Broadway will travel to Cannes in time for the start of the festival on Wednesday, May 14.
They will spend a week scouting screenings, with the 67th Cannes International Film Festival due to run until Sunday, May 25.
The annual celebration is one of the most prestigious films festivals in the world.
Films to be previewed this year include the latest work by Belgian filmmakers the Dardenne Brothers, Ken Loach's newest film Jimmy's Hall, and actor Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, Lost River.
Melissa Gueneau, the Broadway's marketing, communications and press co-ordinator, is also heading to the festival.
The 27-year-old, of Carlton, said: 'The big films at Cannes always make it back here to Broadway. They are the kind of films our audiences want to see.
'We're all really excited about going and watching films, meeting people and talking to people about the Broadway and the exciting things we do.
'We'll be selling Broadway to the masses and finding films we'll be excited about sharing with new audiences back in Nottingham.'
