eBay request for users to change passwords mysteriously vanishes
The company posted the request on the PayPal blog with no text before it was taken down. Odd.
eBay and PayPal are caught in the middle of a controversy on Wednesday morning, following a posting on PayPal's official blog, saying that eBay has requested all users change their passwords.
The blog post, entitled 'eBay, Inc. to Ask All eBay users to Change Passwords,' had no content included, but quickly hit the Web after it was retweeted dozens of times. As of this writing, the page has been taken down, leaving even more mystery in the minds of users.
Although some across the Web have said it might have been a glitch or mistakenly posted, recent security flaws suggest it should be taken seriously. With flaws like Heartbleed wreaking havoc on the Web and an increasing number of major companies having their servers hacked, it wouldn't be shocking if something had happened at eBay that will force the company to ask users to reset passwords.
Neither eBay nor PayPal, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay, have so far commented on the post. It's not clear at this point whether users should indeed change their passwords or wait to hear from eBay or PayPal.
CNET has contacted both companies and plans to update this story when we have more information.
