49ers vs. Cowboys 2014: Time, TV schedule, radio and how to watch online
Will the 49ers show the rest of the league they can put up big numbers on offense or will the Cowboys put up a solid defensive showing?
There are many great rivalries that exist outside of the four-team divisions, and the early-90's rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys was definitely one of them. Said rivalry is somewhat on its last legs given the struggles of both teams since those glory days -- it just doesn't have that potency when they're not slugging it out in the NFC Championship.
But 49ers fans will always dislike the Cowboys and vice versa. It's an excellent way to open up the season for both teams, and stands to address some pretty significant questions about each. The two teams are coming off hugely different seasons, as the 49ers went 12-4 and made it to the aforementioned NFC Championship, while Dallas went 8-8, missing the playoffs down the stretch as the Philadelphia Eagles seized control of a rather weak NFC East.
That said, the perceived weakness of one team (San Francisco's offense) happens to matchup with the perceived weakness of the other (Dallas' defense). At the end of this one, we should know whether the 49ers can execute well enough to take down a vulnerable defense, or if the Cowboys can hold against opponents they're expected to.

Nuts and bolts
As we mentioned earlier, the Cowboys have a pretty rotten defense, or at least they did a season ago. They ranked No. 30 in opposing passing yardage allowed with 286.8, and No. 27 in opponent rushing yards allowed with 128.5. They've got a lot to prove this year, especially alongside an offense that is generally considered solid, with Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray.
San Francisco has all the makings of a strong offensive team, but even after a dominant season it was still ranked near the bottom in the league. Colin Kaepernick is one of the most exciting young quarterbacks out there, but aside from one or two games he hasn't blown anybody away with his arm. With Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree hopefully ready to go right off the bat alongside Vernon Davis and offseason addition Stevie Johnson, San Francisco could be looking to make a statement in the opener.
