Ello social site too popular, gets online attack

Well that didn't take long.

Fledgling social media site Ello has apparently become the target of a denial of service attack. At least that was the posting on the site's home page Sunday afternoon.

The new ad-free site has gathered steam lately as an alternative to Facebook, as it touts that your information won't be sold to advertisers.

Currently in beta testing mode, Ello membership is invite-only for now. So you can only join if you get an invitation from someone already on the site. You can also request an invite on the site's homepage.

Site creator Paul Budnitz has said the site is receiving 31,000 requests every hour and invites are even for sale on eBay now.

In a matter of days, the new social network Ello, described as the 'anti-Facebook' for its stand on privacy and advertising, has become perhaps the hottest ticket on the Internet. Created last year as a 'private' social network, Ello (www.ello.co) recently opened its doors on an invitation-only basis.(Photo: Paul J. Richards, AFP/Getty Images)
