Barbra Streisand's Beats Chris Brown for Top Spot on Billboard 200
Few 72-year olds can do it like Barbra Streisand. Who just landed another #1 album - Barbra Streisand! Duets album Partners not only debuted at #1, but did so with larger than expected numbers ( 196,000 copies). It also made history giving Streisand at least one #1 album in the past six decades. Go Barbra - it's your birthday... well not really!
Chris Brown settles for the #2 spot behind Streisand, as X sells 146,000 copies. While Brown might be disappointed he didn't score his third number one album, X performed better its first week than Fortune, which sold 135,000 copies. Maybe even more notable is the fact that despite being delayed, X outperformed other high-profile R&B albums, including Trey Songz's Trigga (#1, 105,000 copies).
Something else notable about the solid debuts of Streisand and Brown is the fact that the top two albums sold more than 100,000 copies, the magic number these days. Last week, the top selling album, Lecrae's Anomaly, sold 88,000 copies, failing to reach the 100K-mark. Had Lecrae released Anomaly this week, he would've still landed at a respectable #3.
More debuts make some noise on the Billboard 200, if under the tune of 100,000 copies. Tim McGraw settles for third place, as Sundown Heaven Town sells 71,000 copies. In this day and age, 71,000 copies is highly respectable, but compared to the numbers that McGraw once moved, he's downgraded a bit. Right behind him, George Strait drops The Cowboy Rides Away, his live effort, to the tune of 51,000 copies. #4 for a live country album - not too shabby George, keep on riding!
latest album debuts modestly, as Bulletproof Picasso sells 50,000 copies. Motionless in White ends up in the ninth place, with 31,000 copies sold. That's remarkable considering the band is by no means a household name. They manage to beat out the more established Slash, whose World On Fire sells just 29,000 copies.
There is no return for previous Billboard 200 top ten staples Frozen or Sam Smith (In The Lonely Hour), in case you were wondering. Notably, Maroon 5 and Lecrae continue to experience the love near the top of the charts.
'All About That Bass' continues to eschew treble at all costs - well, it continues to keep that #1 spot hot at least.
Next week should be nothing short of an adventure on the charts with a number of notable new albums. The question is how does each album perform? Billboard prognosticates Kenny Chesney, Tony Bennett, and Lady Gaga benefit the most next week. That said, where does that leave the other albums? Jennifer Hudson's danceable JHUD is top-notch, but with R&B cool as a cucumber, how much will it ultimately sell? Lenny Kravitz doesn't sell as he once does, but will the power of 'Sex' be enough to give the rocker a shot on Strut?
