Emma Watson tackled gender politics and feminism in a powerful speech at a United Nations meeting in New York over the weekend.
The 'Harry Potter' actress, 24, who was named a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador earlier this year, introduced her latest platform to the audience of delegates and representatives in an impassioned speech describing how she came to identify as a feminist.
'Why has the word become such an unpopular one?' Watson said, of feminism.
'I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.'
The HeForShe campaign, which is also headed by Wolf Blitzer, urges men and boys to advocate for gender equality, Watson said.
The actress used her personal experience, describing how she questioned 'gender-based assumptions' growing up, and was confused at being called 'bossy' for wanting to direct school plays, to address the worldwide issue.
Watson, who recently graduated from Brown University, also described the HeForShe campaign as one seeking to end the 'us vs. them' mentality, and disassociate feminism with 'man-hating.'
'Men - I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation,' she said. 'Gender equality is your issue too.'
The 'Noah' star addressed her potential critics - especially those dismissing celebrities who take up humanitarian or political causes.
'You might think: who is this Harry Potter girl?' she said. 'What is she doing at the UN? I've been asking myself at the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make this better. And having seen what I've seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something.'
After receiving a standing ovation, and her speech making waves on social media and blogs, the UN posted Watson's full speech online.
