PHOENIX - Injured right-hander Matt Cain showed up in the visiting clubhouse at Chase Field this week and fraternized with teammates old and new. Asked about one of the newest Giants, fellow right-hander Jake Peavy, the longest-tenured one had a quick answer.

'It's expected,' Cain said of Peavy's success. 'This is what I expected when we (traded) for him to fill in my spot, because I saw him way too much up close and personal.'

Peavy continued to take to life back in the National League West on Tuesday, throwing 72/3 dominating innings to lead the Giants to a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Because the Dodgers lost 10-4 in Denver, the Giants are back to three games out in the National League West with 11 to play.

Peavy barely broke a sweat, and the Giants finally gave him a lead in the fourth inning when Buster Posey hit a homer to left field. The Giants haven't fared well against Josh Collmenter but Posey has owned him, going 11 for 18 with three homers and eight RBIs. The three homers mark the most Posey has against any one pitcher.

The Diamondbacks tied it up in the sixth when Chris Owings hit a triple off the center field wall and A.J. Pollock lined a single to left. The Giants struck right back with a run in the top of the seventh. Hunter Pence and Travis Ishikawa led off the inning with singles and Brandon Crawford's deep sacrifice fly easily scored Pence.

Collmenter tossed six shutout innings at AT&T Park last week in a game the Diamondbacks lost, and he gave up just two runs in eight innings Tuesday. Peavy was even better.

He gave up a leadoff single in the first and then retired 16 of 18 before Owings' triple. He got out of that inning with a double play and set the side down in order in the seventh. Peavy put two runners on with two down in the eighth, but Sergio Romo got out of the jam.

In his past seven starts, Peavy has a 1.13 ERA. The Giants have won six of the seven games.

--- Back tightness kept leadoff hitter Angel Pagan out of the starting lineup for the second straight day. Bochy said Pagan would be evaluated on a day-to-day basis and could play Wednesday.

With Pagan out, left fielder Gregor Blanco was moved up to the leadoff spot, although Bochy could move Pence back to the top of the lineup if Pagan misses extended time. Juan Perez got a second straight start in center field and went 0 for 4 with a misplay on a pop-up. Bochy said he wasn't considering using Gary Brown, a September call-up, citing Perez's experience.

'It's hard to try to get lightning in a bottle with 12 games left,' Bochy said of Brown.

--- Tim Hudson has been getting treatment for a sore right hip, but is still scheduled to start Friday night in San Diego.

'At this stage of the game, you've usually got a couple of things going on with all these guys,' Bochy said.

--- Romo was named one of 30 finalists for the Roberto Clemente Award, which represents the player who best represents baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. Romo was selected for his work with community groups and programs such as Athletes in Math Succeed, Mission Graduates, Make-A-Wish, San Francisco Challenger Clinic and the Junior Giants.
