Sennheiser Channels Beats With Bass
We don't like to play the 'because it's branded, it's good' game, but Sennheiser headphones have earned plenty of cred for their quality and sound over the years. So it might come as a bit of shock to audiophiles and headphone enthusiasts that Sennheiser is borrowing a page from Dre and releasing its own 'enhanced bass' line of headphones.
The new headphones will come in two different flavors: Urbanite and Urbanite XL. The former is available now, though it's the on-ear version of the headphones and costs around $200. The latter, which should hit around the fourth quarter of this year, is the fuller over-the-ear model and will retail for a slightly higher $250.
'The Urbanite is completely dedicated to delivering only the most intense sound pleasure that will reflect the skill of Sennheiser's uncompromising aural expertise. It serves up massive bass, while still ensuring excellent clarity through the entire frequency range, making ears feel like it's their first time with a pair of headphones all over again,' reads Sennheiser's description.
The Urbanite and Urbanite XL headphones will come with microphones and audio controls built into their audio cables. That means, of course, that those interested in purchasing the headphones will have to pick the model that supports whatever device it is that they most intend to plug it into—an iOS smartphone or an Android smartphone.
According to Wired, the cable is a bit short. These might not be the headphones to go with if you need a super-long connection at your desktop, as they appear to be more designed for 'smartphone in your pocket' use.
As for how well they'll perform, we almost want to ask—does it matter? Beats by Dre headphones are as much a fashion accessory as anything else. The Urbanite headphones could sound better, but that won't much matter if they can't make a dent among those who consider pretty looks as important as pristine sound quality. And the inverse could also be true: sound quality might not matter much at all if, suddenly, everyone and their mother (and their mother's favorite bands) start 'rockin' the Urbs.'
Sennheiser says the Urbanite headphones will come in black or denim. Those looking to add a little more flair to will have to bump up to the Urbanite XL headphones, which come in black, denim, sand, olive, and a red-white-and-blue iteration called 'nation' (fittingly).
