Twitch malware wiping Steam accounts

A new form of malware, spreading via Twitch's chat service, is cleaning out Steam accounts.

According to security firm F-Secure, a bot on Twitch's chat service spams video channels, asking users to participate in a weekly raffle to win virtual items.

The 'raffle' link leads to a Java program, which asks for your name, email address and permission to publish the winner's name.

Once you've entered your details, the malware drops a Windows binary file on your machine, with this file able to execute various Steam-related commands (such as screenshots, trading your items, buying items and selling your items for a discount).

F-Secure noted that the malware, which it calls Eskimo, essentially cleans out your Steam account, inventory and wallet.

'Being able to sell uninteresting items will allow the attacker to gather enough money to buy items that he deems interesting. The interesting items are then traded to an account possibly maintained by the attacker,' the security firm said.
