Yankees Lose Martin Prado to an Appendectomy

TAMPA, Fla. - Season-ending injuries have become so much a part of the Yankees' season that one more would not have surprised anyone. But in a year in which the team has been hampered by on-field maladies, few could have expected what happened to Martin Prado on Tuesday.

Prado, the versatile player the Yankees acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 31, underwent an emergency appendectomy Tuesday morning and was placed on the 60-day disabled list. His season is over, and the Yankees' season is not far behind.

The Yankees brought up infielder Jose Pirela to take Prado's place. They have 13 games remaining and are six games behind the Kansas City Royals for the second wild-card spot with the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of them. It is a daunting task, especially without Prado.

Since joining the Yankees, Prado, 30, has impressed the team with his versatility and production. He has batted .316 with 7 home runs, 72 total bases and 16 runs batted in over 37 games while playing second base, third base, right field and left field.

Over all this year, he is batting .282 with 221 total bases and a .321 on-base percentage, including 12 home runs and 26 runs batted in over 143 games.

The Yankees picked up Prado from the Diamondbacks for the minor league first baseman Pete O'Brien at the trade deadline, and he is signed through 2016 for $11 million.

He had been playing through a strained left hamstring that might have placed him on the disabled list had it come earlier in the year. Over the last 10 games he took the field in some discomfort, obvious at times, but with the Yankees' playoff hopes somewhat alive, he wanted to keep playing.
