Better Business Bureau gives uber a Failing Grade

Uber's innovative idea to render high end taxi services where people could access the services via their smartphone sounds good though its surge pricing is creating mayhem on at least some customers.

Uber currently holds an 'F' rating from the Better Business Bureau, a nonprofit organization dedicated to settling customer disputes and develop standards around truthful advertising and business practices. The 'F' grade which is the lowest possible ranking rose form more than 90 major customer complaints lodged against it for over 3 years voicing concerns about Uber's pricing policy.

Majority of customers said they were unaware of the sudden increase in pricing, and Uber's customer care service was unresponsive in handling their complaints. Many of them complained that they were charged one price for a ride then later on a very high fare.

One customer posted on the BBB, 'Uber charged my card $710 for a nine-mile drive without notifying me of the surge charges that were in place at the time of my ride and will not refund.'

Uber's surge pricing generally is effective during busy periods of high demand and the company app notifies customers when the surge pricing is in effect before requesting a ride. Some of the customers' complaints claim that Uber charged them multiple hundreds of dollars for surged priced rides without any notification.

Uber has however, disputed that surge pricing helps to balance supply and demand during popular events or times when many users may be requesting rides, but when not many drivers may be on the road.

A section of the customers who use this service, cited fraudulent charge son their credit card statements by Uber, without even having employed the Uber;s app.

The BBB's business ratings are continuously in change depending on how and when the particular business responds to the complaints and other information posted to the BBB site. Wilson said, given the number of complaints left unresolved over the past couple months, it's likely that the 'F' has been there for some time.

One individual said, 'I have been charged three unauthorized transactions from this company whom I have never even heard of in my life.' BBB President and CEO Lori Wilson, said, the 'F' may have been there for months if not longer.
