HP launches Sprout 3D
The HP Sprout is an all-in-one with a difference: the ability to turn a multi-touch surface into a secondary display capable of scanning any 2D or 3D object placed upon it.
Hewlett Packard has announced a new all-in-one PC designed for creation and manipulation of three-dimensional models, dubbed - for reasons that probably made sense to the company's marketing department at the time - the Sprout.
While the Sprout includes a 23' Full HD display similar to any other gracing an all-in-one PC design, the first sign that HP is diverging from the norm is in the inclusion of ten-point multi-touch capabilities. The second sign that something is different comes from the HP Touch Mat, a bundled 20' accessory which provides a further 20-point multi-touch tracking capability. Finally, the HP Illuminator combines a DLP projector with a 14.6 megapixel camera and one of the first commercial implementations of Intel's RealSense technology to provide tracking and capture of 2D and 3D objects placed within its range while also converting the Touch Mat into a secondary display. In short: the Sprout is a 3D powerhouse.
Internally, HP has included the hardware required to keep things shifting along nicely. An Intel Haswell Core i7-4790S provides a balance between thermal envelope and power, as does the Nvidia GeForce GT 745A GPU with 2GB of dedicated DDR3 memory. 8GB of 1,600MHz DDR3 memory is included as standard, expandable to 16GB, along with a 1TB hybrid storage drive packing 8GB of NAND flash acceleration cache. The software side is taken care of by Windows 8.1 and the Sprout Workspace package for object capture and manipulation, aided by a Adonit Jot Pro stylus which can be stored on a magnetic catch at the upper-right of the Sprout's display.
