Two former 155-pound title holders have agreed to meet, as Ben Henderson will face Eddie Alvarez at a UFC Fight Night event on Jan. 18 in Boston.
UFC officials confirmed the lightweight bout on Wednesday, following an initial report by the Boston Herald. The fight will serve as the evening's co-main event inside TD Garden.
Henderson (21-4) is looking to get back on track after a first-round knockout loss to Rafael dos Anjos in August. It was the first knockout loss of the 30-year-old's career.
Fighting out of Glendale, Ariz., Henderson won the UFC lightweight title in a unanimous decision against Frankie Edgar in February 2012. He recorded three successful defenses before surrendering the belt to Anthony Pettis in August 2013.
Alvarez (25-4) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Donald Cerrone at UFC 178 in his promotional debut. A member of the Blackzilians camp in Boca Raton, Fla., Alvarez vacated the Bellator MMA lightweight title earlier this year when the promotion granted his unconditional release.
ESPN.com ranks Henderson and Alvarez the Nos. 6 and 7 lightweights in the world, respectively.
A non-title featherweight bout between Conor McGregor and Dennis Siver is scheduled to headline the UFC Fight Night event in Boston.
