Implosion brings down historic Texas 'Houston Club' building
The historic Houston Club, built in 1954 for Texas socialites, is now a pile of rubble after more than 500 pounds of explosives brought it down.
It took seconds for the 18-story in downtown Houston to collapse, gathering early risers for the Sunday morning blast that will make room for a new office building.
The powerful implosion reverberated through the downtown streets as the building, which had since been devoid of asbestos and other toxic construction materials, imploded, sending billowing dust into the air.
Members of the building's prior tenants, the Houston Club, moved out last year, but watched the show from a vantage point nearby.
'I have wonderful memories of the Houston Club building,' the club's former president, who was not identified in a KPRC-TV interview, said. 'It's amazing how quickly it went away, but it was wonderful how it was there and now it's time to move on.'
The property's new owner, Skanska, plans on constructing the 35-story 'Capitol Tower,' according to the Houston Business Journal.
