National clown club fumes at homicidal clown character on 'American Horror ...

A national clown club is getting its giant shoes in a twist over the portrayal of a homicidal clown on the show FX show 'American Horror Story.'

The Clowns of America International, the country's largest clown club, are spraying their seltzer bottles at the creators of the hit horror series, saying the nightmarish character, Twisty, paints clown performers in a bad light.

'Hollywood makes money sensationalizing the norm,' group president Glenn Kohlberger fumed to The Hollywood Reporter.

'They can take any situation no matter how good or pure and turn it into a nightmare.'

The series' fourth season premiered on Oct. 8 and is set at a circus freak show in Jupiter, Fla., in 1952.

In the opener, the Twisty character, wearing a soiled clown suit and demented grin, stalks a young couple canoodling in a field and then murders the teenage boy with a pair of sewing scissors.

Later, her slays a young boy's parents and locks him and the teenage girl in a decrepit old bus.

Kohlberger hurled a big pie at the bloodthirsty portrayal, calling it a bad stereotype that stokes 'coulrophobia or 'clown fear.''

'Clowns to killers. I choose not to play into any of it,' Kohlberger, who nom-de-clown is Clyde D. Scope, told THR. 'The more attention we give it just gives it more fuel.'

Twisty is played by everyman actor John Carroll Lynch, perhaps best known for playing Norm Gunderson in the 1996 film 'Fargo.'

According to IMDB, Twisty is set to appear in three of the six remaining episodes.

Last week, after the season four premiere, series co-creator Ryan Murphy referenced fans' strong reaction to the character in a post on Twitter.

'Should I be proud or worried that people are freaking out so badly about Twisty,' he wrote.

The clown club's complaints come amid reports of real-life clowns causing a stir in Bakersfield, Calif.

Residents there say they are being terrorized by people dressed as clowns, some wielding weapons like machetes or baseball bats.

The creepy sightings have spread to social media, where several social media accounts have claimed to be behind the threatening pranks.

'There's a natural phobia of clowns,' Bakersfield Police Sgt. Joe Grubbs told ABC News on Monday.

'And, clearly, if someone is dressed up as a clown and holding a weapon in a threatening manner, that's going to frighten people.'

Murphy, meanwhile, appealed to Twisty fans in a tweet promoting Wednesday night's episode two.

'Tomorrow, you will see what Twisty is hiding beneath that mask,' he wrote.
