Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin scored with 2.9 seconds left in regulation to lead his club to a 3-2 win against the Penguins at Consol Energy Center.
Sidney Crosby had been sent to the penalty box at 19:50 for tripping, and the Stars worked the puck quickly looking for a clean lane to shoot.
The Stars trailed 2-1 heading into the third period, and tied the game when Jamie Benn one-timed a shot from the top of the crease at 17:03.
There were several tense moments in the second period for the Penguins, when right wing Pascal Dupuis was taken off the ice on a stretcher.
He was cross-checked in front of the Stars' goal by defenseman Alex Goligoski, and was subsequently hit in the neck area with a shot by teammate Kris Letang.
Medical personnel quickly came to his aid, and Dupuis gave a quick thumbs up to the crowd just as he was wheeled off the ice to chants of his name.
The Penguins went 2 for 4 on the power play in the first period, which was the difference in the game until the Stars' late goals.
The first goal came just 2:28 into the game when Sidney Crosby entered the zone and sent a pass to his left that was redirected into the net by Dallas defenseman Jordie Benn.
The second power play goal came on a rebound by Chris Kunitz at 7:46 with Vernon Fiddler in the penalty box for a hooking minor.
Dallas cut the lead to 2-1 in the second period when Antoine Roussel scored at 6:08. He dug the puck out in a scrum at the wall and got it behind the net to Fiddler, who fed him in front.
Roussel one-timed a short-side shot by Marc-Andre Fleury.
Spezza appeared to score the equalizer 16:27 to play in the third period, but the goal was waved off for goaltender interference charged to Tyler Seguin.
The last time Dallas beat the Penguins in Pittsburgh was Dec. 23, 2000 - an 8-2 victory at Mellon Arena.
