Rafael Nadal withdraws from Paris Masters for 'personal reasons'

Last updated at 12:27

Rafael Nadal has pulled out of next week's Paris Masters, casting further doubt on his participation at the ATP World Tour Finals next month.

The Spaniard, ranked third in the world, cited 'personal reasons' in a statement from the Paris tournament.

Nadal is playing in Basel this week despite suffering with appendicitis, and takes on Borna Coric on Friday.

He had planned to decide after the tournament whether to undergo surgery or complete the season in London.

Basel is just the third tournament Nadal, 28, has played since Wimbledon because of a wrist injury, and he revealed earlier this month that he was on a course of antibiotics for his appendix.

Speaking after his win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Tuesday, Nadal said: 'I feel better, but a little bit tired.

'I've had a few months without playing much tennis and taking the antibiotics makes the body go down. But I'm happy to be in the tournament and happy to be in the quarter-finals.'

Nadal has already qualified for the ATP Finals but were he to withdraw it would open up another place for those battling for the remaining places, among them Britain's Andy Murray.

Further complicating the qualification scenario is the news that US Open champion Marin Cilic has also pulled out of Paris.

The Croat is assured of a place in London as a Grand Slam champion even if he slips out of the top eight, which is possible as he can no longer add to his points tally.
