Samsung Mobile South Africa has launched the Galaxy Note 4 in Cape Town.
Samsung Mobile South Africa has launched the Galaxy Note 4 in Cape Town.
The device will retail for R11 499 off-contract, marking a step up from last year's Note (which launched at an RRP of R8999).
The Note 4 features a quad-core Snapdragon 805 chip (LTE) or octacore Exynos processor (3G), 3GBs of RAM, a 16MP camera with optical image stabilisation and a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 display.
Both the 3G and LTE variants are available from October 17.
Samsung also showed off the Galaxy Note Edge, essentially being the same device as the Note 4, but with a screen that wraps around the right-hand side of the device.
The company didn't give a launch date for the Note Edge but confirmed that it would be sold at a 'slight premium' compared to the Note 4.
The South Korean firm also showed off the Samsung Gear S smartwatch (pegged at around R6000) and the Gear VR at the event.
The Gear VR would unfortunately only be available in South Africa from 2015, but Samsung's Craige Fleischer said that it would be 'affordable'.
Samsung SA said their Gear/Note 3 bundle was very successful, so a Gear S/Note 4 package would be expected, dependent on networks. In fact, the firm said that the Gear smartwatch saw a 20 percent attachment rate to the Note 3 (i.e. 1 in 5 Note 3 owners had a Gear).
Extras?
Samsung SA added that the Note 4 would be coming with Opera Max preinstalled, a data-management tool that compresses all incoming and outgoing data to save cash and improve speeds.
The firm also said that its ADH programme, which sees two free repairs, will remain with the Galaxy Note 4. In fact, the company revealed that it has already conducted 200 000 free repairs across the continent since the introduction of the programme.
Samsung SA also said that it has bumped up its AlwaysOn free WiFi offering from 1GB a month to 2GBs a month. This offering is available to most Samsung smartphone/tablet owners.
