Dallas Cowboys defenders temporarily forget how to play football
The New York Giants defense made a number of silly mistakes on Sunday afternoon to give the Dallas Cowboys a 21-6 lead in their crucial NFC East showdown. But, hey, at least the Giants D realized it wasn't playing by college football rules.
Two members of the Cowboys defense - Bruce Carter and Jeff Heath - failed to touch Giants tight end Brandon Myers after he fell to the turf to catch a fourth-and-3 pass from Eli Manning. When Myers recognized he hadn't been touched, he quickly got up to run the final eight yards for a touchdown.
Heath has an excuse, albeit a flimsy one: He's playing in first NFL season out of Saginaw Valley State. One year ago, a receiver he was covering would have been down, as per NCAA rules that whistle a play dead when the ball carrier hits the turd. Bruce Carter is a third-year linebacker from North Carolina. He's been in the league far too long to forget the simple task of putting a hand on a tumbling tight end.
But, honestly, neither player has any defense. (That sentence can have multiple meanings.) This is the pro game, gentlemen. Know the rules and finish the play.
