'Big Fish' to close on Broadway

Musical adaptation of film and novel had garnered lukewarm reviews

One of the fall's most high-profile new Broadway musicals, Big Fish, will close Dec. 29, after 34 previews and 98 regular performances.

The musical adaptation of Tim Burton's 2003 film and the book that inspired it rode into town on high expectations, boasting a high-profile creative team -- including John August, a regular Burton collaborator who had also written the screenplay, and director/choreographer Susan Stroman, with two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz and acclaimed singer/actress Kate Baldwin leading the cast. But it was met with lukewarm reviews, and generated less-than-bonzo box office.

In a statement, producer Dan Jinks said that the show 'is about the passing on of stories and from the tremendous audience reaction we have received we know our tale will live on. I am so proud of our entire team for creating a unique, heartfelt and inspiring stage production.'

Two other Broadway productions posted closing notices last week: the John Grisham-adapted play A Time To Kill and another musical, Last Date.
