Asus Announces $179 Chromebox Desktop PC

Asus today announced a new $179 Chromebox desktop running Google Chrome OS and powered by an Intel Haswell-based Celeron processor.

The Asus Chromebox is aimed at non-mobile home, school, and business users. Like other Chromebooks and Chromeboxes, Asus's version is designed to be a simple, Web-oriented computer that lets users perform everyday tasks that used to challenge full PCs.

'The Asus Chromebox offers the simplicity, security, and speed of Chrome OS in the most compact and powerful Chrome device to date,' said Felix Lin, director of product management at Google. 'Perfect for home, the classroom or the office, Chromebox is designed for the way we use computers today.'

The Asus Chromebox is built around a fourth-generation Intel Celeron 2955U or Core i3 processor, 2GB or 4GB of DDR3 memory, integrated Intel HD graphics, 16GB SSD local and 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage (for two years), 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Gigabit Ethernet. The system has a media card reader, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, audio, and a Kensington lock port.

The Core i3-powered Chromebox will be able to drive 4K monitors via the DisplayPort, and both models will support dual HD monitors via HDMI and DisplayPort. The Asus Chromebox is 4.88 inches square and 1.65 inches thick, so it will fit anywhere you might stash a media-streaming box like a Roku or Apple TV. Asus is including a VESA mount so you can clip the system behind compatible monitors and HDTVs. The system is fan-less for quiet operation.

Like all Chrome OS devices, the Asus Chromebox will automatically update via the Internet, and is capable of running thousands of apps in the Chrome Web store, and supports multiple users via Google.com accounts.

The Asus Chromebook with Celeron will start at $179 and be available in March. Pricing for the Core i3-powered Chromebook will be available closer to March.
