Joe Pavelski scored a hat-trick to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.


Pavelski tallied three times in the second period, while Raffi Torres and Logan Couture each scored two as the Sharks made an impressive return to action after the Winter Olympic break.


Andrej Meszaros, Brayden Schenn and Matt Read scored for the Flyers, who saw a four-game winning streak snapped.


Lubomir Visnovsky scored 1:55 into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 5-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.


Anders Lee levelled the score twice in the third period to ensure the game went into OT, while Michael Grabner also scored two for the Islanders.


Johan Franzen netted a hat-trick as the Detroit Red Wings eased to a 6-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.


Riley Sheahan, Tomas Jurco and Tomas Tatar also tallied for the Red Wings.


Adam Henrique scored two and the New Jersey Devils built on three goals in the opening nine minutes as they beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2.


Goals from Derick Brassard and Rick Nash gave the New York Rangers a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.


The Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers 5-4, the Dallas Stars saw off the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 and the Nashville Predators edged out the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2.
