Fox's Gotham Casts Alfred, The Penguin and Others
Fox's Gotham is filling out its roster, casting familiar faces from Batman lore, including loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth and villain The Penguin, TVGuide.com has learned.
The drama, which has a series commitment at Fox, explores the origin stories of Detective James Gordon ( Benjamin McKenzie), who will go on to be Gotham's future commissioner, and his battle with the villains who made the city famous.
Elementary's Sean Pertwee has been tapped to play Alfred Pennyworth, the butler to the Wayne family. Alfred is a tough-as-nails ex-Marine from East London who is fiercely protective over young Bruce Wayne in the wake of his parents' deaths. Alfred was most recently portrayed by Michael Caine in the Dark Knight trilogy.

Robin Lord Taylor (The Good Wife, ) will play the infamous Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath on gangster Fish Mooney's payroll who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor. The Penguin was famously played by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns.
Gotham has also cast Breaking In's Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, an emergency room doctor and fiancée of James Gordon who stands by her future husband despite the increasing corruption in Gotham. Burn Notice's Zabryna Guevara has also been cast as Captain Essen, Gordon's boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad who balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that's as much corporate litigator as cop.
creator Bruno Heller will write and executive-produce Gotham with 's Danny Cannon.
