Nelson Cruz hits 27 homers wih the Rangers last season before Biogenesis suspension.
Nelson Cruz, one of the last remaining prominent free agents, has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles, the Daily News has learned.
The 33-year-old Cruz, who was one of the 13 players suspended by Major League Baseball in the Biogenesis scandal last summer, chose the Orioles over the Seattle Mariners, agreeing to a one-year deal worth approximately $9 million.
The deal is pending a physical which has been an issue with the Orioles in the past. Earlier this winter they had agreed to a 2-year deal with closer Grant Balfour that got scuttled when he flunked the Orioles' apparently rigorous physical.
The right-handed hitting Cruz hit .266 for the Texas Rangers last season with 27 homers and 76 RBI. He is expected to play semi-regularly as the Orioles' left fielder.
After a mostly idle winter, the Cruz signing is the second prominent free-agent move by the Orioles in the last week. They signed free-agent pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez to a four-year, $50 million contract on Wednesday.
