Perhaps due to Lopez's star power, the hour-long drama received a '13-episode straight-to-series' order, according to the website. The series is set to begin production in 2015 with an eye towards a fall premiere that same year.

NBC describes 'Shades of Blue' as 'a complex police series that centers on Harlee McCord (Lopez), a single mother and detective recruited to work undercover for the FBI's anti-corruption task force. Part of a close-knit unit known for its conviction record, Harlee has become compromised by her colleagues - all of whom also pitch in to help her raise her daughter - and finds herself faced with the moral dilemma of working against her cop brothers in order to redeem herself.'

TVLine reports that the series will be written by Adi Hasak (who wrote the screenplay for the recent Kevin Costner thriller '3 Days to Kill'), and that the series will be executive produced by Hadak along with Lopez and her 'American Idol' colleague Ryan Seacrest.

'Whether it's producing, acting, singing or any of her other many entrepreneurial activities, Jennifer is an extraordinary talent and life force, and we're delighted to be in business with her and Adi Hasak on this sophisticated show,' said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke in a statement.

'We're especially excited that Jennifer is returning to her acting roots from such great movies as 'Out of Sight,' Salke added. 'And we know that she will create this complicated character in a vivid way that will breathe new life into the cop show genre.'

'Shades of Blue' will be Lopez's first full-time television acting role in two decades (her last TV gig was on the short-lived CBS drama 'Second Chances,' which was canceled in 1994). She can be currently seen on the small screen as a judge on 'American Idol,' along with musicians Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.
