Matthew McConaughey believes his risks paid off.

Matthew McConaughey believes taking a break transformed his career. Before last year's Dallas Buyers Club, the actor's biggest hits had largely been romantic comedies, including 2001's The Wedding Planner and 2003's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.Although the 44-year-old enjoyed making light-hearted films, he felt the need to take a self-imposed hiatus to reassess what he was doing.'I went to my wife and my agent and said, 'I'm going to stop for a bit,'' he told Variety. 'I'm going to sit back in the shadows. I'm getting into my 40s, a great time for a man. I've started a family. I want to take time to laugh and love and enjoy these adventures.'Matthew didn't know exactly how long he would avoid work for, but he admits it was a frightening process. He wondered if disappearing for a while might destroy his entire career.'I just knew I was going to hold out for a while and things would dry out. I didn't know how long they would dry out for, and that was scary,' he said. 'I would get sent things and the paychecks were great, and I would say no. Then, they quit sending them altogether. And then... nothing. So the message got through.'But looking back, Matthew realises that this was the point where directors started considering him for serious roles. The actor is now thankful he took a chance, because it changed the course of his career and gave him the option to play parts that were more gritty and dramatic.'All of a sudden, I became a good idea for people like William Friedkin and Steven Soderbergh - people who hadn't called before, who maybe wouldn't have seen me as a good idea three years before,' he said.Matthew is now up for his first Oscar. The star is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his role in Jean-Marc Vallée's Dallas Buyers Club.Matthew stars in the film as Ron Woodroof, an HIV-positive man who smuggles in drugs the government and pharmaceutical companies refuse to supply to treat him. © Cover Media Group 2014 Back
