'30 Rock' star Elaine Stritch drops F

Stage and screen legend Elaine Stritch is best known for what comes out of her mouth when she's not in character, and on Tuesday, the 89-year-old gave TODAY's Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb a prime example of her tell-it-like-it-is talk.

When asked about her particular gift of uncensored gab, Stritch said the key is to 'just say things naturally.'

'You know, (the audience will) just think in the 'f---,' she added.

But while the TODAY crew reached for the bleep button, Stritch stressed that her use of the F-bomb was meaningful.

'No, no, I meant a serious point by that,' she explained. 'You know, because you hear it so flamboyantly on other channels. All you hear is that.'

The important thing, as far as she's concerned, is that however you say something, you say it honestly.

'I talk pretty openly, and I don't care,' the former '30 Rock' star admitted. 'I think talking and telling the truth is a lot of fun.'

There's plenty of truth to be heard in her documentary, 'Elaine Strich: Shoot Me,' in which she chronicles her struggles with diabetes, alcoholism, the loss of the love of her life and simply being in the biz.

'Let me tell you one line that I tried to end the documentary with,' she offered up.

'Should we bleep it?' Kotb wondered aloud, but there was no need for that. Stritch just stuck to the basics of her craft.

'People who do comedy, it's like food and drink to them,' she said. 'They think of a funny line, and it just came right off the top of their head. You say, 'Thank you, Jesus!''

Just then, Gifford gave the legend a 10-second warning before the break.

'You are not getting the last line in this morning show!' Stritch playfully shot back before using up those seconds and few more.

'Elaine Strich: Shoot Me' played for a variety of film festivals in 2013. It hits select theaters on Feb. 21.
