Shiffrin inspired by figure skate queens

SOCHI: Mikaela Shiffrin said Saturday she owed her gold medal slalom performance to Russian figure skating champion Adelina Sotnikova.
Shiffrin, 18, became the youngest US alpine skiing medallist, and the youngest overall in 30 years, when she finished ahead of Austrian duo Marlies Schild and Kathrin Zettel under the Rosa Khotur floodlights on Friday.
But part of her inspiration came from seeing Russia's Sotnikova shock defending champion Kim Yu-Na 24 hours earlier in the women's individual figure skating final.
'If I could break off part of my medal I would do it and give it to her,' said the American teenager.
'The way she just flowed across the ice, the grace and the beauty, it really inspired me. It was an inspiring event.
'I'm just sad I missed the Korean girl skate because I had to go to bed.'
Shiffrin, who won the world title last year at the age of just 17, had finished a disappointing fifth in the giant slalom in Sochi.
She then overcame a slight error in Friday's second slalom run to take gold.
The youngster said she was, in fact, looking forward to making more mistakes in future as her career grows.
'I hope to have lots of accomplishments and lots of failures,' she said Saturday.
'Never be afraid to make mistakes; that's what makes skiing exciting.
'I want to push women's skiing, I want to inspire people and put on a show. That's what I did last night.'
Shiffrin also praised her mother for some timely make-up advice.
'She told me to wear waterproof mascara in case I cried on the podium,' she explained.
'I was worried last night that I might look like a witch.'
