Unranked Indiana Gives Michigan First Big Ten Loss
Yogi Ferrell scored 27 points, hitting seven 3-pointers in eight tries, to lead unranked Indiana to a 63-52 upset of visiting No. 10 Michigan on Sunday.
Indiana (14-8, 4-5 Big Ten) had lost three of four but led most of the way in improving to 12-2 at Assembly Hall. Noah Vonleh added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Hoosiers, who shot 54 percent to the Wolverines' 40 percent.
'Once I hit a couple, they all felt good,' Ferrell said. 'I was going to let it fly.'
Michigan (16-5, 8-1), which had been the last team with an undefeated Big Ten mark, produced a season-low point total as a 10-game winning streak came to an end. Derrick Walton Jr. scored 13 points and Caris LeVert had 12. They were the only Wolverines in double figures, as their leading scorer, small forward Nik Stauskas, was held to 6 points.
Ferrell, a point guard, was the primary defender on Stauskas, who missed five of six attempts, failing for the third time this season to score in double figures.
'I think it's really good for us,' Wolverines Coach John Beilein said of the loss, adding, 'In the long run, we have to get better.'
The Hoosiers may have reinvigorated their hopes for an at-large berth to the N.C.A.A. tournament by securing their second victory over a top-10 opponent.
The Wolverines are no strangers to coming up short in this series.
Dating to last season's run to the national title game, Michigan is 27-12 in its past 39 games - with three of those losses to the Hoosiers.
Indiana is now 24-8 against Michigan during the past 18 seasons.
The Wolverines' potent offense was off from the start. Michigan had more turnovers (eight) than baskets (seven) in the first half and scored just 6 points on its final 11 possessions to trail, 25-22, at intermission.
Facing their fourth halftime deficit since November, the Wolverines could not recover.
CINCINNATI 50, SOUTH FLORIDA 45 Sean Kilpatrick overcame an off-target performance by scoring 10 of his 18 points in the closing minutes, rallying No. 13 Cincinnati (21-2, 10-0 American Athletic Conference) to its 14th straight victory, this one at home against South Florida (11-11, 2-7).
