KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia - American snowboarder Arielle Gold will not compete in the Olympics after suffering an injury in training on Wednesday.

A U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association spokesman confirmed the 17-year-old would not compete in her qualification round.

Gold was training before her qualification round when she crashed in the halfpipe at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. A USA TODAY Sports photographer observed Gold seeming to favor her right wrist.

The first-time Olympian is considered a medal contender in the event.
