As unsuspecting passersby walked over a subway grate, dozens of snarling actors decked out in decaying flesh makeup popped their arms through to scare their victims.

The brainsssstrust behind AMC's promotion department cooked up a ghoulish publicity stunt in time for 'The Waking Dead's' mid-season premiere Sunday -- infesting Manhattan's Union Square with zombie extras.

AMC also pranked 'Walking Dead' star Norman Reedus last month by recruiting a legless New Jersey teen in full zombie regalia to pop out of a catering table in a Tokyo hotel room during a promotional tour in Japan.

But Reedus, who plays the unflappable Daryl on the horror series, almost immediately recognized Nick Santonastasso. The actor had tweeted out Santonastasso's own viral video in which the teen, who was born without legs or a right arm, scared unsuspecting shoppers in a department store.
