1 in 3 who own exotic animals in Ohio lacks permit
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Records show about one in three owners of exotic animals in Ohio lacks a state permit required to keep them.
A look at some of our favorite images of the past week.
The permits are among the last pieces of the state's crackdown on private ownership following the 2011 release of dozens of wild animals by a suicidal owner at his eastern Ohio farm. Most of those animals were killed.
Owners were required to obtain the permits more than three months ago, on Jan. 1.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture had issued 51 permits as of Friday. Permit applications for 23 owners remain unresolved.
newsandtalking.blogspot.com obtained the state data through a public records request.
State officials say the permit delay comes as they work with owners who are trying to comply with the law's caging standards, along with other requirements.
