Braves, Nats share 10-to-1 title price

Julio Teheran is just one Braves starter dominating opposing lineups in the early going.

The Atlanta Braves, many baseball observers believed, were in trouble when they lost both Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy to Tommy John surgery in spring training.

Following the hits to their rotation, the Braves opened the season at the LVH SuperBook at 15-to-1 to win the World Series and stretched to as long as 20-to-1, a price at which we thought they were worth a few dollar investment.

Based on their updated 10-to-1 price, though, it appears Vegas is back on the bandwagon. The adjustment puts the Braves on the same line as the Washington Nationals, Vegas' favorite NL East team prior to opening day.

In spite of the season-ending injuries to their pitching staff, the Braves still boast baseball's best ERA (2.04), and opponent's OPS (.558), and the second best WHIP (1.06). Incumbent starters Julio Teheran (1.47 ERA, 0.93 WHIP) and Alex Wood (1.54 ERA, 0.97 WHIP) are big reasons for the success, but Aaron Harang (0.85 ERA, 0.88 WHIP) and Ervin Santana (1.95 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) have been surprises as well.

Harang, more so than Santana, has been the source of disbelief among baseball fans.

Santana was signed for $14.1 million late in spring training after a solid 2013 in Kansas City (211 IP, 3.24 ERA, 1.14 WHIP), but Harang was picked up only after the Cleveland Indians released the veteran right-hander in late-March.

And the rich will get richer. Lefty Mike Minor is on the verge of returning to the rotation after a bout with shoulder soreness landed him on the disabled list to start 2014.

The pitching figures to come back to earth at some point during the season, but by then, perhaps their offense (19th in average, 26th in runs scored) will have gotten on track.
