The Orioles are planning to activate third baseman Manny Machado off the 15-day DL on Tuesday, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. That assumes the weather for the team's series-opener against the Pirates cooperates.
Machado, 21, hurt his left knee running through first base last September and eventually required offseason surgery. He played in three minor league rehab games these last few days and tore the cover off the ball: 8-for-12 (.667) with four doubles, one triple and a stolen base. No need to waste that in the minors.
In 156 games and an MLB-high 667 at-bats last season, Machado hit .283/.314/.432 (102 ERA+) with a league-leading 51 doubles to go along with 14 home runs. He deservingly won the Gold Glove at third base as well.
The Orioles have been using a combination of Ryan Flaherty and Jonathan Schoop at the hot corner during Machado's absence.
