Federer, Wawrinka set to lead mighty Swiss against Kazakhstan
Geneva, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - A powerful Swiss team, led by the great Roger Federer and Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, will host heavy underdog Kazakhstan in a Davis Cup quarterfinal this weekend in Geneva.
The best-of-five tie will be staged on an indoor hardcourt at Palexpo.
The matchup will commence Friday when Wawrinka takes on Andrey Golubev, followed by a bout between the 32-year-old 17-time Grand Slam king Federer and Mikhail Kukushkin.
Saturday's doubles have Federer and Wawrinka taking on a Kazakhstani duo of Evgeny Korolev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, while Sunday's reverse singles will pit the world No. 3 Wawrinka against Kukushkin and the fourth-ranked former world No. 1 Federer versus Golubev.
The Swiss are captained by Severin Luthi, while Kazakhstan is guided by Dias Doskarayev. The Kazakhs won the lone Davis Cup meeting between the two nations in Astana in 2010.
The winner in Geneva will meet the Great Britain-Italy victor in a semifinal in September.
Serena Williams says she is exhausted and needs a break.
Two days after she knocked off the tournament's No. 1 seed, Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm battled for another win Wednesday at the Monterrey Open.
Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka will take on Andrey Golubev in the opening singles match of Switzerland's Davis Cup quarterfinals tie against Kazakhstan.
