GIF: Matt Cooke called for kneeing on Avs defenseman Tyson Barrie

Matt Cooke has been on the straight and narrow for a couple of seasons now but the Minnesota Wild forward with the dubious track record deviated from that path on Monday in Game 3 against the Avalanche.

In the second period Cooke stepped up on Avs defenseman Tyson Barrie in the neutral zone and collided with Barrie, knee to knee. Barrie was clearly hurt and left the game. Meanwhile, Cooke was given a minor penalty for kneeing.

Here's a look at the hit from @PeteBlackburn.

So that doesn't look very good and definitely won't help the reputation he has been working so hard to restore. Sure looks like he went out of his way to stick his knee out there and stray off his line to make contact.

In fact, it's likely Cooke will get a hearing with his old friends at the Department of Player Safety. It was a pretty bad instance of kneeing and could have easily been worth more than only two minutes.

Barrie, by the way, is out for the game. If Cooke does have a chat with the league, Barrie's injury will have a role in any potential punishment as well.

Injury update: Tyson Barrie (lower body) will not return.
