Michael Phelps is expected to come out of retirement and compete in his first meet since the 2012 Olympics next week.
USA Swimming announced Monday that it expects Phelps, along with other swimming stars such as Ryan Lochte and Katie Ledecky, to compete at the Arena Grand Prix at Mesa, Ariz., from April 24-26.
Phelps, a 22-time Olympic medalist, is expected to swim competitively for the first time since the 2012 Olympics.
The move is not surprising, as Phelps' longtime coach Bob Bowman said three weeks ago that Phelps felt 'pretty good' about his training and would likely look at upcoming meets to compete in. Phelps had rejoined the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's drug testing pool last year and regained his eligibility for competition in March.
Phelps, 28, will likely start with shorter events, like the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle. 'Something short to see if he's got any speed or how his strokes are doing, that kind of thing,' Bowman told USA TODAY Sports last month. Phelps would 'probably' add more events down the line, he added.
