Michael Strahan Officially Joins Good Morning America

04/15/2014 at 08:10 AM EDT

Michael Strahan made it really official Tuesday when he proudly marched onto the set of Good Morning America.

GMA's lifestyle anchor, Lara Spencer, kept noting throughout the 7 a.m. hour, before Strahan appeared, that whatever it was he was there to announce was hardly a surprise. She then embraced him when he entered, shortly after 8.

Co-anchor Robin Roberts noted that a red carpet had been rolled out for him, while George Stephanopoulos said, 'A super-sized personality deserves a super-sized cup.' and handed Strahan a Texas-sized coffee mug.

When Stephanopoulos also presented the new arrival with a shiny new alarm clock, Strahan noted that it wasn't set to the correct time, but said, 'It's a pleasure to get up early.'

'We're so excited,' said Roberts, 'you're going to join us a couple days a week.' It was also said that Strahan would handle stories that interested him.

As was reported at the beginning of the month, the Live! co-host and former New York Giants defensive end, 42, was in line to join the top-rated morning program for some time.

The show recently bid farewell to two of its longtime regulars, newscaster Josh Elliott and weather expert Sam Champion, who left for NBC Sports and the Weather Channel, respectively.

On April 1, Strahan told his Live! co-host Kelly Ripa that should a GMA gig kick in for him - as news stories were saying it would - he had every intention of continuing to costar with her on their 9 a.m. show.

She said she'd have the coffee ready for him.
