Sebelius Says Another 3 Million In Medicaid Thanks To Obamcare
The Obama administration announced an additional three million people enrolled in the expanded Medicaid health insurance program for the poor, bolstering their numbers of Americans with medical care coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Earlier this week, President Obama said 7.1 million people have signed up for coverage in private health plans available via state and federal marketplaces known as exchanges.
But also part of the health law is the expanded Medicaid program. Though states were given the option to participate in the expansion, 26 states and the District of Columbia did so.
'Enrollment in states that adopted the Medicaid coverage expansion increased five-fold compared to states that are not expanding Medicaid,' Sebelius said in a statement posted on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services blog today. 'We expect enrollment in March to be even higher, although individuals can continue to enroll in Medicaid all year round. Eligibility determinations also continued to grow: between October 2013 and February 2014, 11.7 million people were determined eligible for Medicaid and CHIP by State agencies, up from 8.9 million reported last month for the October - January period.'
The news is good for private health insurance companies who administer Medicaid like Humana (HUM), Aetna (AET), UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and Centene (CNC).
