Brazilian captain Thiago Silva gives away penalty kick, should have been red ...
The national nightmare continues in Brazil. Minutes into the third-place game with The Netherlands, Brazilian captain Thiago Silva mindlessly brought down Arjen Robben to give away a penalty kick. Robben flashed past Silva and was one-on-one with Júlio César, but Silva reached out his arm and pulled Robben to the ground, denying him a clear goal-scoring chance.
Silva argued that he fouled Robben outside the penalty area, and he may be right. Still, referee Djamel Haimoudi showed extreme leniency in giving Silva a yellow card.
Robin van Persie converted the penalty, his fourth goal of the World Cup, to put Brazil in an early hole.
