5 Seconds of Summer album scores record debut
The teen act 5 Seconds of Summer got some scream-worthy love on the charts this week. They open at No. 1 with sales of 259,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
That's the third-highest starting sales figure of the year. (The first? Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories,' which opened with 383,000 copies banked). It's also the biggest bow for a debut album in 7 years - since Daughtry's self-titled first release, according to Keith Caulfield, Billboard's chart czar.
This isn't 5SOS's first appearance in the Top Five. Several months before their full debut disc, they issued a brief EP 'She Looks So Perfect.' It opened at No. 2 with sales of 143,000, bouyed by the irresistable couplet 'you look so perfect standing there/in my American Apparel underwear.'
The group has benefitted greatly from being managed by the company behind the world's top boy band, One Direction. 5SOS has been serving as the opening act on O.D.'s stadium tour. The jaunt comes to MetLife Stadium Monday and Tuesday.
Their score on this week's chart establishes 5SOS as the first of the latest wave of teen acts to successfully ride O.D.'s coat-tails.

5SOS's album also does their Australian homeland proud. They're the second Down Under act to debut at No. 1 of late. Country-mate Sia opened in that slot two weeks ago with her latest disc, '1000 Forms of Fear.' According to Caulfield, 5SOS are the first instrument-playing Aussie band to debut in the ultimate slot on the Top 200 since AC/DC's 'Black Ice' back in 2008.
In other chart news: Weird Al Yankovic's album, 'Mandatory Fun,' which blasted into the top chart spot last week fell to No. 3 this week, with a 68% decrease in sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
