Blackberry buys 'anti
CANADIAN PHONE MAKER Blackberry announced that it has acquired Secusmart on Tuesday, a Dussledorf-based mobile security firm best known for its 'anti-eavesdropping' technology.
Secusmart is a mobile security firm that encrypts all aspects of mobile communications, including calls, texts and data. Blackberry's buyout of the firm suggests that it is looking to go after the Android-powered Blackphone, which claims to be the most secure on the market, after the two firms had a public row earlier this month.
Terms of the acquisition, which is the first since John Chen took over as CEO of the firm last November, have not been revealed.
Hans-Christoph Quell, MD of Secusmart said, 'Secusmart and Blackberry's solution already meets the highest security requirements of the German federal authorities and NATO for restricted communications.
'We see significant opportunities to introduce Secusmart's solutions to more of Blackberry's government and enterprise customers around the world.'
It's unclear what Blackberry plans to do with Secusmart, but it's likely that the firm will be eyeing its 'anti-eavesdropping' technology as it looks to cash in on those looking to make their communications surveillance-proof.
Blackberry has previously worked with Secusmart to develop special technology for phones that were distributed to several German government agencies. Bloomberg reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is among Secusmart's clients, following revelations that her calls were intercepted by the US National Security Agency (NSA) for years.
The deal is still subject to regulatory approval. Speaking at an event in New York where the announcement was made, Chen said he's confident that Germany will approve the sale, especially since the government already uses Blackberry phones and software. µ
