George Clooney admitted that he enjoyed picking a public fight with the Daily Mail, after he won against the British daily tabloid newspaper.
'It's just fun to slap those bad guys every once in a while, knock 'em around,' the 53-year-old actor told Variety via phone from Lake Como in Italy.
Early this month, Daily Mail reported that the mother of Clooney's fiancée Amal Alamuddin, Baria, is not in favor with their impending marriage for religious reasons. This story was quickly slammed by the ' Gravity' star through an op-ed for USA Today, calling it completely 'fabricated' and 'irresponsible.'
Daily Mail apologized to Clooney but insisted in a statement that their report was not a fabrication, emphasizing that the scoop came from one of their reputable and trusted freelance journalists.
But this coverup was once again criticized by Clooney in another op-ed he wrote for USA Today. He wrote that the newspaper was lying as they did not originally cite their source as a 'reputable and trusted freelance journalist,' instead they claimed 'a family friend' spoke directly to them.
Clooney knows that as a public personality, the media, at one point, would, invent stories about him. In fact, he even jokes about the tabloid reports with his friends, he told Variety.
'I would sit with my friends and we'd just go, 'So they just sat at a computer and just went, OK, this is what I'm gonna say today.' I mean, literally, because you just go 'There isn't literally an element of truth in this,' ' he told the entertainment trade magazine. 'You just laugh, and let it go. I'm used to it after all these years.'
But he decided to pick a public fight with the Daily Mail because he is concerned that the tabloid has 'becoming a source for some pretty legitimate newspapers.'
Also, the story published by the newspaper was potentially harmful to his fiancée and her mother, and could result in religious hate.
'Every day they write things that aren't true, but every once in a while they write something that is actually dangerous to your family, and it's probably not true. And that's the one you pick,' Clooney told Variety.
