PHILADELPHIA -- Matt Cain didn't go on the disabled list during his first eight big league seasons. On Monday, Cain landed on the DL for the third time in three months.

Cain was put on the 15-day DL with elbow inflammation related to the bone chips floating his right elbow. The first warning flag went up the day before the All-Star break, when manager Bruce Bochy announced that Cain would move from second to fifth in the rotation, giving him 12 days off before his first start of the second half, scheduled to be Tuesday against the Philadelphia. Instead, Yusmeiro Petit will take the mound. Right-hander George Kontos was called up from Triple-A Fresno to take Petit's spot in the bullpen.

When Cain was seen with a sleeve on his arm Friday, Bochy acknowledged that Cain's elbow was 'cranky.' Asked how he was doing, Cain shrugged.

'I'm feeling like I'm feeling,' he said.

Cain was put on the DL for the first time in his career when he was hit by a line drive last August. His first stint this season came after he cut his right index finger while slicing a sandwich in late April. A right hamstring strain put him back on the DL on May 31. Both times he recovered quickly, and he has missed just 27 games this season. The elbow injury could be more serious, although the Giants are hopeful that rest will cure Cain's current issue. The bone chips can move around at times, causing inflammation. But they can also slot back into a more comfortable spot.

Cain is 2-7 in 15 starts and has a 4.18 ERA. His best work has come of late -- he gave up only four earned runs in his final three first-half starts.

The Giants made a second roster move, placing first baseman Brandon Belt on the seven-day concussion disabled list. As expected, Adam Duvall was recalled to take Belt's roster spot.
