Jeter leading off for power
The American League's high-powered starting lineup for Tuesday's All-Star Game is set, and fans won't have to wait long to see Derek Jeter step into the box.
The Yankees shortstop, playing in his final Midsummer Classic before his retirement at the end of the season, is leading off for manager John Farrell's club against Adam Wainwright and the National League squad.
Mariners ace Felix Hernandez is starting on the mound for the AL team. Following Jeter in the order is Angels superstar Mike Trout (playing left field) and Jeter's old teammate and Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano. Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is batting cleanup.
Jose Bautista -- the league's top vote-getter -- is batting fifth and playing right field, Baltimore's Nelson Cruz (designated hitter) and Adam Jones (center field) are hitting back-to-back, while A's third baseman Josh Donaldson and Royals catcher Salvador Perez round out the AL's starting nine.
'I think any time you're surrounded by that caliber of players and you get the fortunate ability to see them across the field or compete on the same field with them, and to see them assembled in one clubhouse, it's a rare opportunity,' Farrell said at a news conference Monday. 'But when you think about the depth -- and you look at a third baseman with Oakland who's hitting in the 8-hole that's got nearly 20 home runs -- just by position in the lineup, it reflects the caliber of players, the depth in it and the reserves will be coming in behind these guys are deserving to start in their own right. It's a rare and unique opportunity.'
Tuesday will mark Jeter's 14th and final All-Star appearance.
'To celebrate a player who's not only a champion but a guy that sets the bar that I think all players should aspire to -- the way he's handled himself with class, with performance, no doubt a Hall of Famer,' Farrell said. 'This will be day that many baseball fans that are either in the ballpark or watching, will remember -- Derek's last All-Star Game.'
