Tanaka Goes on Disabled List After MRI on Pitching Arm

CLEVELAND - Less than 24 hours after he pitched the worst game of his remarkable debut season in the major leagues, the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka was headed back to New York on Wednesday to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his right arm.

After surrendering 5 runs and 10 hits to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night in a 5-3 loss, Tanaka did not complain of any physical discomfort. Still, in a season in which Tanaka has so often been dominant on the mound, the performance was disconcerting. And it came after an outing last Thursday in Minnesota in which the Twins reached him for four runs and nine hits in seven innings, although he did end up with a victory in that game.

Tanaka, 25, became a celebrity in the baseball world when he posted a stunning 24-0 record in 2013 with the Rakuten Golden Eagles in the Japanese major leagues. At that point, he made it clear he wanted to jump to American baseball, and the Yankees won the bidding with a $155 million, seven-year deal.

So far, Tanaka has been worth every dollar, allowing the Yankees to remain in contention for a playoff spot in a season in which three other members of the starting rotation have gone down with significant injuries. Now the Yankees can only hope that Tanaka is not about to become the fourth starter to be sidelined.

Brian McCann, who was behind the plate for the Yankees on Tuesday night, said in the Yankees clubhouse Wednesday afternoon that he did not sense that anything was wrong with Tanaka in the game.

'The only thing from yesterday was that his pitches didn't have the sharp action they had in the past,'' McCann added.
