Xbox One Kinect sensor v2 for Windows goes up for pre

MICROSOFT HAS STARTED selling its Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, which will start shipping on 15 July.

Microsoft recently started selling a version of its Xbox One console without a Kinect sensor, but that hasn't stopped the firm from launching a version of it for Windows users that will enable touch-free PC applications.

Following its confirmation that the sensor would arrive last year, Microsoft said on Monday, 'The Kinect for Windows v2 sensor gives developers more of the precision, responsiveness and intuitive capabilities they need to develop interactive voice- and gesture-based applications for the Windows desktop and Windows Store.'

At Microsoft's online store, you can now pick up the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor for £159.99, before it starts shipping next week. The device is also available to those in the US, priced at $199.

The product does not ship with the Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 software, with the license instead being sold separately, Microsoft said.

The firm added, 'The Kinect for Windows v2 will operate only with applications developed for Kinect for Windows v2. Developers can use the Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 to build applications with C++, C#, VB.Net, Cx, or JavaScript.'

Kinect likely won't be limited to Xbox and PC users, as speculation last month suggested that it will arrive in a Nokia Lumia phone later this year. This smartphone, expected to be the sequel to the Lumia 1020, reportedly will come stuffed full of sensors allowing for gesture-based controls, such as the ability to answer a call by holding it to your face. µ
